This is the amazing story of our award-winning 6+1 Cab Shiraz and why we really are the best kept secret ✨ swipe for a behind the scenes of the bottling.
In 2004, we asked Francois Agenbag at Mountain Ridge if he could make us some wine. He said, “Without a doubt.” We did some whites and we did two reds, which was a Cab and a Shiraz. The leftovers, he put into barrels.
A year later, he said, “This wine is looking good. I think we should bottle, but as a blend.” So, he put the two together. He always used to say the sum of the parts makes this an amazing wine.
Once it hit the bottle, which was around about November 2005, it just didn’t taste the same anymore.
In March 2006, we were having a going away party for an employee, and I asked him, “What would you like?” He said, “I want to have that 6+1 Cab Shiraz.” I opened up a bottle, or two, or three, or four, and it absolutely blew my socks off.
The first thing I did was pick up the phone and call Jacqui. I said, “I just want to let you know, this 6+1 Cab Shiraz, I don’t know what’s happened, but now it’s shooting the lights out”.
It won Swiss International Airlines’ “Best Kept Secret” and then, as you can see, the awards just kept on coming. It culminated with Francois Agenbag, winning Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year, which is like climbing Everest.
Francois departed this earth in 2021 and Jacqui and I have now just bottled a release of Francois 6+1 Cab Shiraz blend. Absolutely delicious.
This is a true honor for a man that could make a good wine.
